As Director of Information and Technology in a fairly large school district, one of our biggest challenges is providing a safe and secure environment that is conducive to learning. "Since the installation of Spector CNE on a number of our computers in the office, internet abuse and inter-company email (gossip) has nearly been eliminated.

The installation of our network two years ago together with fast internet access was a huge temptation to our 30 employees. This -- in combination with computer games being used after the lunch hour was over -- was costing us huge amounts in lost time.

We informed our employees that your product was being used and this alone increased efficiency greatly. There were still a few unbelievers. So we were forced to print out the screens and give these to the employees. This action all but eradicated the abuse. "I wanted to write and thank you for your Spector CNE software. For the past 17 years I have directed a non-profit organization that operates in the inner-city and works primarily with high-risk low-income people.

As part of our services, we offer incidental computer familiarization and job search training. This requires us to have all the internet options available including browsing, email, webmail, and MSN.

Although we have strict guidelines as to their their usage, guidelines which are made clear to all computer users including our staff and volunteers, we can never be sure that the computer users are not engaging in illegal activities—activities that can be directly traced back to our computers. "For more than three months, I researched for a solution that would enable our hospital to monitor web usage on our employee computers. I found Spector CNE to deliver a cost-effective solution, and one which did not require expensive hardware. I considered N2H2 and Websense, but found both their cost and the amount of time required to be too high. In addition, Websense and N2H2 only did web filtering. Spector CNE included email monitoring and provided information as to what programs our employees were using the most and even showed us that many employees were playing Solitaire 1 to 2 hours a day. Our company monitored four computers over a two-week timeframe and found that we were losing 10 hours per week due to employees doing their bankiing on the Internet and playing cards on the computer. We had been planning on adding staff to one of our departments. "Spectorsoft has solved some big problems for us. We found out, completely by mistake, that a large number of our staff were playing computer games and chatting on the Internet while on company time. We had a monitoring tool but it only monitored web surfing. It did not have the capability to monitor Web mail or Instant Messaging

Once we rolled out Spector CNE we were able to collect screen shots, Web mail sessions, and chat conversations from the offending employees. We had a Use of Communications Systems policy in place and could have terminated several people but the problem was so widespread, and some of the employees were considered quite valuable to the company, we decided to distribute the pictures anonymously to demonstrate the technology without naming any one person.

The game playing stopped cold and we have only had very few isolated incidents since then which were dealt with swiftly because we knew about it immediately, thanks to Spector CNE. We had been delaying the rollout of Instant Messaging until we had a tool that would allow us to monitor the traffic. Spector CNE gave us that ability and much more. "I have worked for three different brokerage houses during my career, and at all three, I was responsible for the technology to ensure compliance with SEC and NASD regulations regarding email retention and review. I have utilized several different products in the course of meeting those regulations and, by far, Spector CNE has the greatest potential of all.
